Participant’s fit to the reference profile

Calculations to obtain the participant’s fit to the reference profile

Follow the below steps to calculate the participant’s fit to the defined reference profile:

1- First, you must Define the scale. As an example use a scale of 1 to 5.

2- Establish a Reference profile. In Panorama you have to establish the reference profile by assigning ranges. For example, when you select a value of 3, we are including all values that round up/down to it, i.e. from 2,5 to 3,49.

Continuing with the example, select a competency whose reference profile will correspond to the range 3-4. For the calculations, the system includes values ranging from 2,5 to 4,49, thus covering all decimals that by rounding would be included within the range selected as a reference profile.

Competency selected with a range between 3 and 4

3- The maximum distance above and below the profile is then calculated.

For example: In this case, the maximum difference that can be above the profile will be 0,51, considering you can get 5 as a maximum. The maximum distance below the reference profile will be 1,5.

Distance from the maximum value to the upper range = Max value – Max reference profile

Distance from the maximum value to the upper range = 5 – 4,49 = 0,51

Distance from the minimum value to the lower range = Min reference profile – Min value

Distance from the minimum value to the lower range = 2,5 – 1 = 1,5

Upper and Lower range of fit profile

4- You keep the maximum distances. That is to say if, in a competency, the distance from the minimum value to the lower range is greater than the distance from the maximum value to the upper range, you would keep the lower one.

Example:

5- Once you select the maximum distances, you can calculate the total maximum value, the score in the distance that someone who is in the opposite range to what you have defined as the reference profile will have. This is obtained by adding the maximum range values of each competency.

6- Next, calculate the distance from the score to the reference profile for each participant.

Example: If you defined a reference profile between 3 and 4 (range 2,5 to 4,49) and the participant has gotten a 2, the distance to the profile will be the subtraction of 2,5 and 2, that is 0,5.

Calculate the distance of all competencies to the closest value of the reference profile:

7- Participant fit to reference profile.

Add the highest distance of the participant to the profile. This total is the distance that the participant is from the reference profile.

If you divide the distance of the participant by the maximum distance of the profile, you get a mismatch of the participant.

Participant mismatch = 4,37/9,01 = 0,485

Since what you need to obtain is the fit to the reference profile, you must reverse the score:

Participant fit = 1 – participant mismatch

Participant fit = 1 – 0,485 = 0,515

Therefore, this participant fits the profile by 51,5%

Finally, you need to transform the participant fit into the scale (in this case, the scale is from 1 to 5), so you will multiply by the maximum of the scale.

Score = (Participant fit * scale max)

(0,515 * 5) = 2,575
